Dr. James Collier Norton developed the Del Norte Place Historic District, and in 1927 he opened it to the public. It was designed with the whole neighborhood with an English Cottage style in mind. There was more development of the surrounding areas, which left the Del Norte Place neighborhood enclosed on three sides by Park Greenbelt. Construction performed later featuring “Period Revival,” and “Ranch” homes were showcased in the “beautiful subdivision” Dr. Norton also developed.

Originally the “Del Norte Place District” was referred to as “the countryside west of town” when it was being sold back in 1927 when it was first developed. To this day, the neighborhood still puts off a strong sense of being the “countryside.” There is a mixture of 1030’s English cottages and 1940’s Ranches. The streets are lined with deep grassy easements, grown trees, and the sound of relief from there being “no” city traffic.

The District of Del Norte Place comes close to being another Mayberry USA, and in 2009, the Phoenix New Times went as far as to say Del Norte Place was another Mayberry USA when it was voted the “Best Historic Neighborhood.” In fact, when you are in Del Norte Place, it is difficult to imagine it as the 5th largest city in the United States of America!

Each home in this District averages to be about 1500 square feet of living space, and generally, they will have 3-bedrooms and 2 baths. Several of “Phoenix’s Parks” was named on the list of the “Nation’s 12 Best City Parks” by “Forbes Magazine.”

The District of Del Norte Place Neighborhood is a place where families sit out on their front porches and watch their children ride their bicycles and play in the street.
