As Phoenix’s first historic district, Roosevelt showcases various historically and architecturally significant buildings and structures. This streetcar neighborhood’s narrow, deep lots often display both California and Craftsman bungalows.

Approximately half of the homes in Roosevelt date back to the turn of the century. It was one of Phoenix’s original neighborhoods. In the scheme of Phoenix, Roosevelt is pretty new; the city limits didn’t even encompass Roosevelt until 1893, and Arizona wasn’t a state until 1912! (If you’re from the east coast and grew up in a 200-year-old house, your eyes may roll at that last statement.) But Phoenix is a young city; Roosevelt wasn’t even incorporated until 1893, and Arizona wasn’t even a state until 1912!

If you plan on using a car, you should know that Roosevelt’s streets were initially built for horse-and-buggy use. Do not try to open a curb-facing car door if you park along with one of Roosevelt’s residential streets! You will get a nice scrape due to the high curbs here!

The Roosevelt Historic District is an excellent example of an urban neighborhood with choices in the city’s downtown. Downtown Phoenix is home to several popular restaurants, the Public Market and Farmers’ Market, and several large corporations. You can catch the light rail and go to a Chase Field baseball game. You can walk to the Comerica Theatre or the Puppet Theater (it’s not just for kids anymore). The Burton Barr Library is right on Central if the kids need a book to read over summer break. Walk the dog through the tunnel underneath the linear Margaret Hance Deck Park if she needs a change of scenery.

In Phoenix, Roosevelt Action Association is a group of neighbors fighting to improve their urban neighborhood for decades, helping to make Roosevelt the first historically designated district in Phoenix and one of the most sought-after neighborhoods to live in. Roosevelt Row usually plans some events at the galleries and businesses lining Roosevelt Street. Roosevelt, a Special Planning District, has also been designated to provide additional protection for the neighborhood’s history.
